Share a Story

A crossing. A neighbor. A day you never forgot. We would like to hear your story.

We welcome short personal stories and fiction connected to the San Juan Islands and the wider Salish Sea. You can send a finished piece, a rough draft, or simply an idea. If you need help shaping it, say so.

Start with an email

Send your story or idea to contribute@salishseatales.com. Paste the text into your email, or attach a Word document or PDF.

Tell us a little about it

Include the name you would like published, the island or place connected to the story, and whether it is a personal account, fiction, or a historical tale. If you have included imagined dialogue or details in a historical story, please make that clear.

Short is welcome. As a starting point, aim for 500–1,500 words, but a brief idea is enough to begin a conversation.

What happens next

We will read submissions and get in touch about pieces we would like to develop. Sending a story does not publish it automatically. We will discuss edits, credit, and permission to publish or record it with you before it appears.

Please send your own work. If it has appeared elsewhere, let us know where. You are welcome to propose a pen name.

Need a starting point?

Tell us about a crossing that did not go to plan, someone who made an island feel like home, or a place that still lives in your imagination.
