A sea of islands. Countless stories.
Tales from the Salish Sea is a growing collection of short personal stories and fiction rooted in the San Juan Islands and the wider Salish Sea. It is for the people who live here, the people who visit, and anyone who likes a good story. We also introduce the people and nonprofit organizations caring for these communities and the waters around them.
A place for stories worth keeping
An ordinary crossing. An unforgettable neighbor. A moment on the water that stays with you. Some stories come from memory, some from imagination, and some begin with a curious piece of island history.
Each story can have its own voice. What brings them together is a connection to these islands, shorelines, and waters. We label personal stories, fiction, and historical tales so readers know what kind of journey they are taking.
Read a little. Listen awhile.
Read the stories here, or hear them brought to life in our upcoming podcast. Episodes run under 15 minutes and include a brief community spotlight. Our first recordings use AI-generated narration and character voices.
Islanders helping islanders
Stories bring us closer to a place. Learning about the people who care for it gives us another way to belong. Our community spotlights introduce local organizations working in food access, recovery, end-of-life support, and other parts of island life.
We share their work so readers and listeners can learn more, find support, or volunteer. We do not collect donations on their behalf.
Your voice belongs here
You do not need to be a published writer. We welcome finished pieces, rough drafts, and ideas that need a little help finding their shape.
